He stands just over three feet tall, wearing a Bears hat and T-shirt partially hidden by his sweat shirt. The look on his face tells he's nervous, his clothes hint that it might be because of who he's about to meet. He scans the room, sees him, his face illuminates.
Brian Urlacher hands out coats and signs autographs, laughing and smiling as he's doing it. This is the scene as another "Clothes for Kids," new winter coat distribution takes place. This time in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago at a community center named El Valor.
"It's incredible, exciting, bringing coats for the kids. They really need this, it's a bit of good news in the middle of what's going on," said El Valor Vice President Clara Lopez.
The kids enter from one side of the room, the coats are set out on tables according to size. Behind the tables Illinois State Crime Commission/Police Athletic League of Illinois volunteers, State Senators and Representatives, police officers, and business men and women help pick the right size. The room is a constant flow of kids, in the middle of all of it, by girl's sizes 8-12, is Brian Urlacher.
"It's a great thing, a chance to give back a little bit, especially coats, its cold," said Brian Urlacher.
After signing almost 200 autograph pictures for those who show up late missing him, Urlacher leaves, heading for the next and last of three distributions for the day. On the way out he stops for more autographs, more pictures, more smiles.
